My little sister, Eleanor, is a cute girl who loves listening to Mozart’s symphonies and collecting small handmade figurative sculptures from a young age. Her passion for music led her to learn the piano, and she eventually became a professional piano player in our city. Her friend Constance occasionally visited to teach her some music tracks, which was the reason my father was working hard to save money to buy a piano for her, dreaming of seeing her become the best piano player in the world. Unfortunately, he passed away before he could see her success. His death was a painful loss for all of us, especially Eleanor. This is when my challenging journey began to support my family and fill the void left by my father.
The Inspiration Behind Our Handmade Sculptures
Indeed, I took on various jobs during my working life and met many people who worked as postmen, actors, farmers, students, musicians, dancers, and more. Furthermore, we would meet on weekends to talk and have fun. Hence, listening to their stories sparked a passion for writing within me. Consequently, I began writing a book to share the societal values their stories contained. After finishing my book, I asked my mother for feedback. She suggested transforming my friends’ stories into vintage handmade figurative sculptures.
“Wow! What a brilliant idea,” I said.
“These values and rich heritage should be shared with society to encourage people to uphold them. Surely, the best way is to embody your friends’ stories in vintage handmade figurative sculptures that enhance home décor and remind people of the societal values that many have forgotten,” she replied.
Thus, motivated by my mother’s idea, I began assembling a team. Suddenly, my mother remembered her friend Georgina’s daughter, Maria, who was skilled in creating textile sculptures. I quickly approached Maria with the idea. She was impressed with my story and, as a result, believed it was worth pursuing because of the meaningful social values within it. However, Maria asked whether I could afford the cost of the materials needed to create the sculptures.
I admitted, “Honestly, I can’t.” Then an idea struck me. “Maria, what about using cotton?” I asked. Maria responded, “Oh! I haven’t tried this before, but we can give it a go since cotton is more affordable.” Smiling with excitement, I replied, “Amazing! Let’s get started.”
The first textile figurative sculpture Maria created from cotton was inspired by my friend Lilian, and it turned out wonderfully. After all, we decided to use cotton as the primary material for our sculptures.
The Beginning of Marseem
As my dream began to materialise, more people started visiting my shop. Realising we needed help managing it, Maria suggested that her husband, Waseem, take responsibility for managing the shop. Straightaway, he welcomed the idea and joined our team.
In appreciation of Maria and Waseem’s invaluable support, I decided to incorporate their names into the shop’s name. We combined the first three letters of Maria’s name with the last four letters of Waseem’s name to create “Marseem.” Besides, our goal is to share societal values and neglected heritage with every generation while adding timeless character to homes through our vintage handmade figurative sculptures.
Additionally, I would like to conclude by expressing my heartfelt gratitude to all my friends for allowing me to share their stories with the world. I also want to thank those who supported me in launching my shop, especially my mother, her friend Georgina, and my friend Sebastian, who was a great support in writing my book.
Finally, I want to thank you once again for visiting my shop and exploring my vintage handmade figurative sculptures. Furthermore, I wish you the very best in finding the sculptural character that speaks to you and brings lasting meaning to your home.
