Making a Deer Head
Make a Handmade Cotton Deer Head Doll (Wall-Mounted)Creating wall-mounted deer head dolls from cotton wool has long been a charming way to add a cozy, handmade touch to home décor. In this blog, I will take you step by step through my process — from building the initial form to sculpting the details with cotton wool — so you can create a sturdy and beautifully finished piece. If you want to learn DIY cotton deer head doll, this guide is for you.
Create the Base ShapeI start by forming the basic deer head shape using metallic cooking paper. I make the shape slightly smaller than the final size, because it will gain bulk once I add layers of paper, glue, and cotton wool.
Strengthen the Shape with Paper and PasteTo make the fragile metallic paper form rigid, I cover it with layers of old paper (like newspaper) using homemade flour paste. How I make the paste: I mix one spoonful of flour with cold water. I cook the mixture until it thickens into a smooth paste. Sometimes I use PVA glue or wallpaper glue instead. I let the structure dry completely. Once dry, it becomes firm and ready for the next step.
Apply the First Layer of CottonWith the hardened base ready, I begin shaping the deer’s muzzle by applying the first layer of cotton wool. I gently stretch and pull the cotton to create smooth transitions and natural contours, pressing it into place to define the nose, cheeks, and forehead. At this stage, I focus on building the basic structure rather than fine details, making sure the cotton sits evenly and follows the silhouette of the deer’s face. I use glue to secure the cotton and adjust it until I’m satisfied with the proportions. Once the entire first layer is shaped, I let it dry thoroughly so it becomes firm enough for the next steps.
Cut the Base in Half and Remove the CoreAfter the cotton layer dries, I carefully cut the head form in half to remove the metallic paper base. Why I wait to remove the paper: The starch glue I use for the cotton wool soaks into the rigid paper base. If I remove the core too early, the moisture can deform the shape. Cutting the dried form in half ensures the shape stays strong and stable.
Reinforce the Cotton Inner StructureOnce I remove the metallic paper base, I dry both halves again. When fully dry, I fill the inside of the mold with cotton wool to add stability and use furniture glue for extra rigidity.
Join the Two Halves to Form the Full Deer HeadAfter reinforcing the inside, I join the two halves together to restore the full shape of the deer head. I begin by applying wood glue along the edges to secure them. Once the glue has dried, I cover the joined seam with a layer of cotton and starch glue to strengthen the cut area and help the halves stay firmly in place as the bond sets. Then, I add more fresh layers of cotton over the joint, smoothing and reshaping the form until the seam disappears.
